Learning and Technology Centre

The Learning and Technology Centre (LTC) provides an assortment of services in five specialty areas:

  • Assistive Technology resources and consultations
  • Resource development, supporting client programming
  • Adult education, focusing on life skills
  • Client Information Technology (IT) services
  • Accessible computer lab

Assistive Technology Resource Services  (in-centre and community)

The Assistive Technology Resource Consultant offers guidance and support in choosing and purchasing the best equipment for the desired task. The assistive technology library offers a variety of technologies which help individuals increase independence. Clients may borrow equipment to trial in different environments before deciding to purchase their own.  The consultant also provides education, training and technical support for equipment users.

Resource Development  (in-centre service)

Resource Development supports client programming within the Centre through modification and adaptation of client learning materials:

  • Visual schedules
  • Visual aids for daily living
  • Cafeteria menus
  • Social stories
  • Communication cards
  • Literacy materials
  • Learning games etc…

Resource Development also creates client memorials and media supports.

Adult Education Learning Centre  (in-centre service)

The Learning Centre provides individual and group educational classes, using personalized teaching methods to achieve client goals. Focus areas include:

·       Public Transportation (Bus)

·       Banking

·       Bookmobile

·       Book Club

·       Access to Government Services

 

·       Math

·       Telling Time

·       Money & Budgeting

·       G.E.D.

·       Resume Writing

·       Community Inclusion Participation

 

·       Kitchen Skills

·       Internet Safety

·       Sexual Education

·       Hobby Development

·       Daily Living Skills

·       Vocational  Support

 

The Learning Centre also supports monthly visits of the Annapolis Valley Regional Library Bookmobile; publishes The Observer, a client written newsletter; and oversees book clubs for various reading levels.

Information Technology Services  (in-centre service)

IT Services provide technical support in the areas of computer access, assistive technology, and mobile devices, computer refurbishing and recycling of PC systems and laptops:

  • Installing Software and Hardware
  • Maintaining and Repairing Equipment
  • Troubleshooting Computer Issues
  • Determining and Installing Appropriate Security Measures
  • Configuring Computer Networks
  • Providing Technical Support On-Site, Remote Management, or Via Phone or Email
  • Electronic Recycling Program

Computer Lab  (in-centre service)

The Computer Lab supports clients in developing computer literacy skills and assists with communication with family and friends.  The Lab has adjustable table heights, touch screens, adaptive keyboards and mice. These can be individualized for the user, eliminating physical barriers.
