Learning and Technology Centre

The Learning and Technology Centre (LTC) of KRRC provides services in five specialty areas:

  • Assistive Technology (AT) resources and consultation
  • Resource development, supporting programs for clients
  • Adult education, focusing on life skills
  • Client Information Technology (IT) services
  • Accessible computer lab

 Assistive Technology Resource Services (In-Centre and Community)

The Assistive Technology Resource Consultant works independently and in conjunction with the Cambridge Community Outreach Team (CCOG) and offers guidance and support in choosing and purchasing the best equipment for the desired purpose/task. The Assistive Technology Library contains a variety of technologies which help individuals increase their independence. Clients may borrow equipment to trial in different environments before deciding to purchase their own.  The consultant also provides education, training, and technical support for equipment users.

Resource Development (In-Centre)

Resource Development supports client programming within the Centre through modification and adaptation of client learning material such as:

  • Visual schedules
  • Visual aids for daily living
  • Cafeteria menus
  • Social stories
  • Communication cards
  • Literacy materials
  • Learning games, etc. …

Resource Development also creates client memorials and media supports.

Adult Education Learning Centre (In-Centre service)

The Learning Centre provides individual and group educational classes using personalized teaching methods to achieve client goals. Focus areas include:

  • Literacy
  • Public transportation (bus)
  • Accessing government services
  • Numeracy and math
  • Telling time
  • Money, budgeting, and banking
  • General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Resume writing
  • Community inclusion/participation
  • Internet safety
  • Sexual education
  • Leisure/hobby development
  • Daily living skills (e.g. cooking)
  • Vocational support

The Learning Centre also supports monthly visits by the Annapolis Valley Regional Library’s ‘Bookmobile’.

 Information Technology (IT) Services (In-Centre)

 IT Services provide technical support in the areas of computer access, assistive technology, and mobile devices; computer refurbishing; recycling of PC systems and laptops; and:

  • Installation of software and hardware
  • Maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Troubleshooting computer issues
  • Choice and installation of appropriate security measures
  • Configuring computer networks
  • Providing technical support on-site, remote management, and/or via phone or e-mail
  • Electronic recycling program

Computer Lab (In-Centre)

The Computer Lab supports clients with the development of computer literacy skills, the exploration of individual interests, and maintaining communication with family and friends.  The Lab has adjustable-height tables, touch screens, and adaptive keyboards and mice. These can be individualized for the user, eliminating physical barriers to access.
